About this work
Two bulls face each other in the foreground, heads lowered and horns pressed together as if butting or straining against one another; one is dark chestnut brown, the other pale grey-white. Behind them a wide pastoral valley opens out, with grazing cattle scattered across golden fields, dark hedgerows, distant hills and mountains beneath a heavy bank of grey clouds.
Painted with loose, energetic brushwork and thick impasto, the scene uses ochre, moss green and slate-blue tones, with the swirling sky rendered in broad expressive strokes that echo the physical strain of the animals below. The strong contrast between the dark and pale bulls, and the churning brushwork throughout, give the picture a dramatic, forceful energy.
