About this work
A butterfly's spread wings dominate the composition on a diagonal, one wing pale cream and grey, the other dense black with warm ochre patches, meeting at a dark body just off-center. The insect is shown close-up and cropped by the edges of the canvas, with no background beyond a few flat dark and light planes behind it.
Long, scratched white lines radiate outward from the body, cutting across the black and cream fields and giving the surface a raw, agitated energy. A soft wash of pink appears low in the composition, the only warm note among the sharp contrasts of black, white and ochre. The dry, gestural handling creates a tense, dramatic mood.
