About this work

A row of leafless trees, reduced to stark black silhouettes, marches along the crest of a dark hill; a rutted dirt road climbs from the foreground toward the ridge and disappears among the trunks. Beyond the hill a narrow band of pale light glows along the horizon, the only break in an otherwise heavily overcast sky.

The palette is almost monochrome—charcoal greys, deep browns and black—applied in a dense, granular texture that fills the sky like drifting smoke or rain. The stark tree silhouettes and the thin strip of light create strong contrast, giving the large canvas a brooding, dramatic weight despite its restrained color range.
