About this work

The Griboedov Canal curves away between stone embankments topped with wrought-iron railings; leafy trees line both banks, and a small arched stone bridge crosses the water in the middle distance, with an ochre building's roof and chimneys showing through the branches on the right.

Loose, transparent watercolor washes in soft greens, blue-greys and muted golds capture quiet reflected light on the canal's surface; the palette stays gentle and overcast, with fluid, understated brushwork producing a calm, unhurried view of the city waterway.
