About this work
A weathered wood fence and snow-laden rooftops enclose a village yard; through a gap in the boards, laundry hangs on a line beside a lit window. Beyond the houses rises a five-domed cathedral, blue onion cupolas topped with gold crosses against a pale sky, framed by bare branches.
Cool blue-grays and whites dominate, warmed only by small lamplit windows and a yellow tinge in the foreground snow. Loose, translucent watercolor washes build the drifts and timber textures, while the distant cathedral is picked out in finer, luminous detail, giving the scene a hushed, wintry stillness.
