About this work
Tall bellflower stems curve and cross above a low tangle of purple-leaved foliage and small orange blossoms, filling the sheet from edge to edge. Buds and open blue-violet bells hang at different heights against an almost empty, pale ground, with only a thin wash of blue suggesting sky along the top edge.
Indigo, violet and burnt-orange pigments are laid in transparent, wet-in-wet washes that pool and bleed softly at the petal edges, while stems are drawn with a fine dry brush. The loose, unhurried handling and open paper give the study a quiet, breathing calm.
