About this work
Classical marble statues on stone pedestals line a wide gravel path through a park, their pale figures set against blazing autumn foliage in red, orange and gold. The avenue narrows toward an ornate wrought-iron gate at the far end, where two small figures walk in the dappled light, and patches of blue sky and drifting clouds show through the canopy overhead.
Warm oranges and rust tones dominate the canvas, set off by cool blue-grey shadows on the statues and sky. Loose, textured brushstrokes render the fluttering leaves and dappled sunlight with an impressionistic touch, while the statues and gate are handled more solidly, giving the scene a bright, tranquil, autumnal calm.
