About this work
A man in a white wrap and red patterned tunic carries a tall bundle of dried reeds over one shoulder and a woven gourd flask at his hip, a long pipe held to his lips with one hand. Behind him a loose herd of cattle, some pale, some dark, grazes across an open, dusty plain dotted with reddish huts.
Earthy ochres, siennas, and muted greens dominate the palette, applied in loose, textured strokes that leave the canvas ground visible through the thinner passages, while brighter white and red accents mark the figure's clothing. The soft, hazy handling of the distant herd and huts against the more solidly modeled figure creates a sense of open air and quiet rural rhythm.
