About this work
Tall dry grasses and a few seed-headed reeds fill the lower half of the canvas, their thin stems bending together as if stirred by wind. The field stretches from edge to edge with no other object in view, and the pale sky above fades into the same beige tone, so the horizon barely registers as a line.
Rendered in a narrow range of buff, grey and warm white, the grass is built from fine, dry brushstrokes over a heavily textured, plaster-like ground. The upper sky is left almost bare, soft and worked with broad scraped passes, while the grass below is drawn in tighter, wiry lines. The result feels quiet and still, evoking a hushed, overcast day.
