About this work
A grassy field opens toward a low timber barn and a tall conical haystack, with bare and half-turned trees at the left and a rutted dirt track curving into the foreground. Low outbuildings and a patch of water are glimpsed further back beneath a heavy grey sky.
Muted greens, browns and grey-whites are laid on in broad, direct strokes typical of an outdoor study, the sky built from soft overlapping clouds. The damp, subdued light and quiet, empty field give the scene a melancholic, late-autumn calm.
