About this work
Tall, straight pine trunks climb through the composition, their reddish bark catching bands of sunlight against the darker mass of fir branches on either side. Behind them a lighter stand of thinner trees glows in hazy backlight, and in the foreground a sunlit path of grass, moss and scattered stones opens between the trees.
Warm ochre and rust tones on the lit trunks contrast with cool blue-green shadow in the foliage, built up with vertical, textured pastel strokes that follow the bark's grain. Patches of pale sky show through gaps in the canopy. The interplay of strong light and shadow gives the forest interior a still, sun-warmed, contemplative quiet.
