Big Сhaos

A tumbled heap of pale rocks fills the lower foreground, giving way to a dense band of dark green shrubs and a tall stand of trees whose crowns catch a warm golden light along the horizon. A single tall spire-like tree rises among the treetops. Beyond, a pale, hazy sea meets a pale sky.

The rocks are worked in chalky pinks, lilacs and pale greys, while the vegetation ranges from deep blue-green shadow to bright orange and yellow where sunlight catches the leaves. Loose, hatched pastel strokes build texture in foliage and stone alike, contrasting with the smooth wash of the distant sea. Warm and cool tones balance each other, giving the view a calm hush despite its tangled foreground.
