About this work
The composition centers on a walled monastery complex crowning a low hill, its clustered white buildings topped by tented towers, a bell tower and small onion domes. Dark stands of trees frame the ensemble on either side, while a winding dirt path climbs the grassy slope in the foreground, passing two small wooden cottages with pitched roofs toward the gate.
Soft pastel strokes build a muted palette of grey-lilac, olive and dusty rose, blended so that forms dissolve gently into the hazy air. Diffuse, even light leaves no hard shadow, and the visible grain of the paper shows through the pigment, lending the scene a quiet, subdued stillness typical of an overcast or fading afternoon.
