About this work
A tight group of white-barked birches rises from shallow floodwater at the center of the composition, roots and grass tufts just breaking the surface; a line of bare and budding trees continues along the flooded bank into a hazy stand of forest behind.
Soft pastel greens, ochres and blues describe new foliage, wet earth and sky reflected in the calm water, with the birch trunks' pale verticals mirrored almost perfectly below; the loose, blended handling and gentle light give the scene a fresh, quiet, early-spring stillness.
