About this work
A low stone bridge crosses a broad river, its arches reflected in the still water below. Along the far embankment, a row of pale ochre and cream buildings with pitched roofs stretches into the distance, while a small motor launch drifts near the bridge and tiny figures cross on foot.
Loose, feathery brushstrokes dissolve architectural detail into soft patches of cream, pink and pale blue, with the sky and water rendered in nearly the same misty tone. The muted, sunlit palette and blurred edges create a tranquil, breathing atmosphere typical of open-air impressionist painting.
