About this work
A narrow village lane, paved with stones, curves between a low stone wall and clustered cottages with steep roofs and shuttered windows. A tall church spire rises above the rooftops at the center of the composition, while lines of laundry hang from a wooden fence on the left, and a wisp of chimney smoke drifts near one of the houses.
Small, dabbed brushstrokes in muted ochre, grey-green and dusty rose build up the stone textures, giving the surface a granular, tapestry-like quality. Soft overcast light flattens the shadows and unifies the palette, lending the empty street a hushed, timeless calm.
