About this work
A long horizontal panorama dissolves into abstracted blocks of color and heavy impasto. Dark angular shapes along the lower register suggest half-submerged boats, pilings or buildings reflected in near-black water, while pale rose, cream and mustard patches float above, loosely evoking clouds, sails or distant rooftops.
The palette layers deep blues and blacks against warm ochre, rust and pale pink, applied in thick, scraped and knife-worked strokes that build a rough, encrusted surface. Forms stay deliberately ambiguous rather than descriptive, and the heavy texture and murky contrasts give the scene a turbulent, unsettled feeling matching the title's sense of rising water.
