About this work
A pale cream-ivory ground is crossed right of center by a cluster of dark diagonal strokes and thinner scratched lines forming a scaffold- or ladder-like shape. Faint smudged marks sit in the upper left, scattered fine incisions run across the surface, and a small dated signature runs along the lower edge.
The near-monochrome palette of ivory, grey and black sets dry, scumbled brushwork against sharply scratched linear marks. The worn, textured surface and restrained tonal range give the piece a calm yet unsettled feel, built from the tension between soft ground and hard, angular strokes.
