About this work
A man in a plumed hat, black-and-red doublet and gold medallion stands at right, raising a shallow cup, while at left a woman with a striped conical headdress and green laced bodice lifts a wine glass; they face each other across a white-clothed table. The table holds a lobster, two whole fish, a ewer, goblets and small dishes, and a large fish floats horizontally in the gilded background above them, framed by lines of antique script.
The background is worked in gold-leaf-like ochre inscribed with faux-manuscript lettering, against which the deep red, black and green costumes stand out sharply. Paint is applied in smooth, detailed layers with crisp outlines around each object, giving the scene a stylized, symbolic richness and an air of ceremonial mystery.
