About this work
Set against a flat black ground inscribed with Latin mottoes and card symbols, a man with a rhinoceros head wears a gold-trimmed green coat, carrying a slim cane, striding at left. Beside him a woman in a teal bodice and ochre skirt walks in profile with a fan, a small peacock behind her; at right, two pink flamingos stand close, one wing fanned open. The composition reads almost heraldic, isolated figures lined against unbroken black like an emblem, painted with crisp, enamel-smooth surfaces and cool jewel tones - jade, dusty pink, ochre - picked out in gold. Flat light and the animal-headed figure give the scene a stiff, enigmatic solemnity.
