About this work
A cream-and-red comic mask with a broad smile is crowned by curling ribbon peaks trimmed in gold, each hung with a small bell, against a near-black brown ground. Below it, tubes and containers of different heights stand upright on a wood-toned surface like the towers of a small skyline, with a flattened cloth mask lying in front.
Rendered in oil on canvas with a low-key palette of browns, ochres and dull reds, selective light pulls the mask and the tube skyline out of the surrounding dark. Paint is smooth on the mask's face and rougher, dabbed, on the clustered tubes. The scale contrast between the oversized mask and the tiny towers gives the scene a staged, dreamlike quality.
