About this work
Two tall clay vessels, one pale and one burnt orange, are arranged side by side, their necks and shoulders blending seamlessly into the profiles of two young women's faces wrapped in pale headscarves. Clustered around them are a scallop shell, a conch, a spiral nautilus shell, and a spray of pink and white poppies with green leaves. Below, on a stone ledge, a striped blue drapery and a small yellow fish complete the arrangement.
The composition is built from warm terracotta and cream tones set against a dense, mottled dark teal-green ground, so the vessels and faces seem to glow forward from the shadow. Paint is applied in thick, textured strokes on the pottery and ledge, contrasted with smoother modeling on the faces and flowers. The fusion of still-life objects and human features gives the picture a quiet, enigmatic stillness.
