About this work
The view looks across the Neva toward a low embankment lined with buildings and a bridge, with the golden dome and towers of St Isaac's Cathedral rising above the rooftops on the far bank. Ice floes drift on the dark water in the foreground, bordered by a snow-covered bank with a row of bare young trees and an overhanging branch at upper left. Lit windows and street lamps dot the far shore beneath a pale, streaked evening sky.
A cool grey-lilac sky gives way to warm rose and gold along the horizon, echoed in reflections that ripple across the icy river below. Paint is built up in loose, visible strokes with small touches of impasto for the lights and highlights, keeping detail soft rather than sharp. The hushed color harmony and quiet reflections give the scene a calm, contemplative winter stillness.
