Clouds over Isaac

A broad expanse of choppy river water dominates the composition, its waves rendered in dense, overlapping strokes stretching toward a low far shore. Along that distant embankment a continuous line of buildings is broken by the small gilded dome of St. Isaac's Cathedral, with a stone ledge and bollard occupying the near foreground.

Deep blues, greens and muted browns describe the restless surface, applied with thick, textured brushwork that captures wind-driven movement across the water. A pale, cloud-streaked sky and soft haze over the far shore lend the view an airy, breezy energy typical of a bright, changeable day on the river.
