About this work
A modest cottage sits nearly engulfed by a heavy pillow of snow that curls over its roof and eaves, leaving only a chimney and a sliver of dark window visible. Warm ochre walls catch direct sunlight on one side while the other falls into shadow. A patch of clear blue sky opens at upper left, and deep snowdrifts with long shadows fill the foreground.
Thick, loaded strokes of paint build the crusted snow into ridges and hollows, while sharp contrasts of gold sunlight and cool blue shadow give the surface real weight. The brushwork is bold and gestural, almost sculptural in the snow passages. The bright, crisp light lends the scene an energetic, cheerful winter mood.
