About this work
A weathered wooden bridge spans a broad canal, its dark pilings reflected in the water alongside flocks of gulls in flight. Two rowboats are tied at a stone landing where several figures sit; a shirtless man perches on the steps nearby while another appears to be in the water. Rows of colorful apartment buildings line the far embankment under a bright sky.
Cool blue-grays in the water contrast with the warm ochre and pink facades of the buildings beyond, all rendered in quick, textured brushstrokes. Sunlight glints off the ripples and picks out the white gulls against the shadowed bridge. The loose handling and strong light-shadow contrast give the view an active, midday summer energy.
