About this work

A crowded street leads toward a tall minaret rising above ochre buildings, with a bearded rider on a white horse passing market stalls shaded by blue awnings. In the foreground two women in headscarves and pale robes walk with a child, while a man on a bicycle crosses in front of a cluster of pedestrians on the sunlit pavement.

Intense ochre and sandy tones of the walls and street contrast with a saturated blue sky, the strong sun casting sharp, dark shadows beneath the figures and horse. Thick, confident strokes define the crowd and architecture with economy, while smaller touches pick out patterns in the clothing. The bright light and dense activity give the street a hot, animated bustle.
