Singing

About ten men and women crowd tightly together in a wide horizontal composition, dressed in floral shawls, red blouses and plain dark jackets. A seated man at center opens his mouth as if leading a song, head tilted, hands gesturing, while others around him tip their heads back or lean in, their faces emerging from a dark, indistinct ground and dissolving into shadow at the edges.

Warm ochre, brown and cream dominate, lit from an unseen source that picks out faces and hands while the surroundings fall into soft haze. Brushwork is loose and blended, edges melting into one another to suggest collective motion and communal warmth.
