About this work
A bearded man's face is shown in profile, eyes wide and calm, while behind and above him a scaly, clawed creature with a gaping fanged mouth and wild curling mane looms as if part of the same body. The beast's clawed feet grip a stone ledge at the lower right, its coiled tail and hair merging visually with the man's own tangled curls and beard.
Rendered entirely in dense pencil hatching and stippling, the drawing builds deep blacks and textured greys with no color, giving every scale, claw and hair strand a tactile, sculptural presence. The tight, meticulous linework and the calm human face set against the monstrous form create an unsettling, dramatic tension between reason and beast.
