About this work
A horizontal row of small white marionette figures, each with a round head and draped robe, hangs from strings along the top of the canvas, manipulated by pairs of hands reaching down from above. Below them, a line of human heads and shoulders, cropped at the neck, emerges from an otherwise black background, faces turned in different directions, some looking up toward the puppets.
The composition is painted almost entirely in black, with the puppets and faces picked out in stark white and warm flesh tones, creating strong tonal contrast and a spotlighted, theatrical effect. Brushwork is broad and economical, emphasizing silhouette over detail. The juxtaposition of controlled puppets and watching faces gives the scene a dramatic, unsettling undertone.
