About this work
A ceramic jester mask — a white face painted with red-and-gold markings around the eyes and a wide red smile — sits beneath a crown of nine pointed, bell-fringed peaks in black and gold. Below it, arranged in a semicircular fan on a dark red tabletop, lie folded strips of striped fabric in pink, green, grey and blue, echoing the shape of protective masks.
Painted in oil on canvas, the composition is dominated by saturated crimson and near-black tones that push the pale mask forward through strong contrast. Brushwork stays smooth and controlled, with crisp highlights on the gold trim and bells. The pairing of an ornate carnival mask with plain folded cloth gives the still life an unsettling theatrical charge.
