About this work
A cluster of pale, mask-like faces floats at upper left above costumed carnival figures in ruffled white collars, one beating a small drum. At center a golden, sunburst-haloed face glows amid the gathering, while at right a figure in a dark, feathered or beaked mask merges into shadow. The scene reads as a nocturnal masquerade crowded with overlapping revelers.
Deep blues and blacks dominate the right side, set against warmer pale yellows and creams on the left, with the golden mask as the brightest focal point. Paint is applied thickly and freely, faces barely sketched in with loose lines, giving the crowd a spectral, dreamlike presence. The effect is theatrical and charged with festive mystery.
