About this work
A crowd of masked and hooded figures fills the frame, pale oval faces stacked beneath streaks of pink and cream drapery at upper left. A yellow-cloaked figure at right raises its arms toward the group, while hands reach over a pale, table-like shape at centre.
Muddy greys and browns dominate, broken by acid yellow, dusty rose and flicks of turquoise near the top. Oil and pastel are dragged wet-into-wet, faces reduced to a few marks for eyes, giving the scene a hallucinatory, uneasy mood.
