About this work
Two masked figures fill the right side of the canvas in close profile, one a pale, long-nosed mask, the other a dark, feathered headdress framing a painted white face. Beyond them a hazy waterfront recedes into the distance, its arcaded buildings and reflections dissolving into mist over a teal-green lagoon.
Deep blues and blackish greens dominate, warmed only by faint gold touches reflected in the water. Oil and pastel are layered thickly around the masks, sharpening their pale faces against the surrounding gloom, while the background is scumbled and blurred. The effect is quiet and unsettling, a masked encounter suspended in nocturnal stillness.
