About this work
On the left, two figures in voluminous white gowns and elaborate feathered headdresses stand close together wearing pale carnival masks. Across an indistinct, fog-like space, a dense cluster of figures in red, orange and gold costumes and masks presses forward on the right, one raising an arm as if gesturing.
The scene is built from loose, layered strokes of oil and pastel, the ground dominated by cool blues and teals against which the warm reds and golds of the right-hand group flare vividly. Forms dissolve into one another with soft edges and smeared pigment, creating a hazy, theatrical atmosphere.
