About this work
A heavy iron truss bridge with X-braced girders crosses a narrow industrial canal, its piers reflected in dark green water. Low warehouse buildings and a smaller footbridge stand at left, while barges and moored boats crowd the near bank; small figures are scattered along the towpath below the structure.
The sky is built up in thick strokes of yellow and ochre pastel streaked with violet-grey cloud, throwing the bridge into cool blue-grey silhouette. Paint is applied loosely and scraped in places, giving the steelwork a rough, sketch-like texture and the whole scene a heavy, industrial dusk atmosphere.
