About this work
Several wooden rowboats are beached in the foreground mud of a riverbank, their dark hulls facing the water. Across the river, a row of industrial buildings with tall smoking chimneys stretches along the far shore, its reflection breaking up in the rippled surface, with low hills receding behind it on the left.
The composition is dominated by an enormous sky of molten orange, gold and violet clouds that fills nearly two-thirds of the canvas and mirrors itself in the still water below. Loose, energetic brushstrokes build the clouds and reflections in the same warm key as the smoke rising from the chimneys, giving the scene a heated, dramatic glow.
