About this work
A massive whitewashed bell tower with a row of narrow arched window slits dominates the composition, its dark pitched roof against a stormy lilac-gray sky. A smaller house with a red roof stands further back among trees, and a lone figure walks along a dirt path across the grassy slope in the foreground.
Thick impasto strokes build the tower's plaster surface in creams and pale blues, streaked with shadow to convey its scale and age. The sky is worked in broad sweeps of violet and grey, while the grass below is laid in loose green and ochre dabs, giving the scene a weighty, brooding stillness.
