About this work
A crenellated brick rampart stretches diagonally across billowing clouds, forming the wall of a golden city glimpsed in outline beyond. Armed angels in colored robes guard the battlements and gates, while more winged figures tumble through the sky below; at upper right a haloed, bearded figure sits within a burst of golden rays, and a robed woman kneels on a rock in the foreground, gazing up.
Etched contours are overlaid with delicate watercolor washes - ochre and rose for the city, blue and violet for the angels' robes - against a darker outer border. The layered technique fuses fine engraved line with soft, luminous color, giving the vision a glowing, otherworldly radiance.
