About this work

Two empty wooden rowboats are moored side by side in a narrow channel, seen from a high angle. Their weathered hulls, ribbed interiors and plank benches are rendered in detail, while taut mooring lines rise diagonally out of frame. The surrounding water fills most of the sheet, dappled with color and broken by the boats' dark reflected shadows.

The palette moves between teal, olive, ochre and violet pastel strokes layered directly onto the paper's tooth, leaving a broken, hatched texture rather than smooth blending. Light seems to shimmer across the water's surface, giving the scene a loose, sketch-like immediacy and a quiet, still atmosphere.
