About this work
A wide, calm lake fills the composition, its still surface reaching toward a low line of hills on the far shore. A scattering of pale and dark rounded stones covers the near shore in the foreground, and a small village with a slender white church spire sits along the distant bank, with a cluster of trees at the water's edge on the right.
Soft lavender-blue and grey tones dominate the sky and water, with muted ochre and green in the distant shoreline. Gentle horizontal strokes render the water's near-still surface, broken only by faint ripples, while the pebbles are dabbed in short, varied touches of grey and cream. The subdued, even light gives the scene a calm, quiet stillness.
