About this work
A long white fortified wall with round and tent-roofed towers encloses red-roofed buildings, a gilded onion dome and a tiered bell tower. A bare tree and dark shrubs stand before the wall, and a plank footbridge crosses a stream in the foreground meadow, dotted with haystacks and dry grass.
Soft lilac, mauve and grey-green pastel dominates, with the gold dome the single warm accent under a hazy pink-grey sky. Broad, textured strokes describe grass and sky, while the architecture is drawn in firmer, whitened marks, giving the walled town a quiet, contemplative stillness.
