About this work
A narrow stream winds through a mixed forest of young firs and slender bare-branched birches, its banks still heaped with granular, melting snow. Patches of dark earth and matted grass show through where the thaw has advanced fastest, and the trunks and twigs above are mirrored in the still, tea-colored water.
The pastel is worked in soft, granular strokes of white, grey-blue and ochre for the snow, set against the darker greens of the firs and the warm browns of the underbrush. Cool shadowed tones dominate the snowbanks while the water carries faint warm reflections, giving the scene the damp, quiet hush of early spring thaw.
