About this work
The view looks past the thick, split base of a large tree toward a tall multi-story building partly hidden behind its bare, branching limbs. A bare dirt path runs along the foreground; no figures appear, leaving the tree and the receding street facade as the sole subjects.
Pastel is built up over a loose ink underdrawing, the bark worked in overlapping strokes of ochre, green, blue and violet to suggest dappled light and shadow, while the building behind is sketched thinly in pale blue and orange. The quick, gestural handling gives the scene an open-air, on-the-spot freshness.
