About this work
A young nude woman with long dark hair sits on a rocky ledge, her body turned toward two heavily robed, bearded elders who study an open book. Behind them, more cloaked figures stand holding spears aloft, while a round shield and another spear lean against the rocks in the foreground.
Executed in charcoal with strong tonal contrast, the drapery of the elders is built from dense, textured blacks while the nude figure is left comparatively smooth and pale, drawing the eye toward her. The crowded, overlapping composition and low, raking light across the rocks give the scene a hushed, expectant tension, as though awaiting an event just beyond the frame.
