About this work
A muscular nude man lies sprawled across a rocky ledge, wrists and ankles shackled with chains bolted to stone and a broken tree stump, while a large dark eagle grips his chest and tears at his side with its beak; a snake coils among the rocks below and small flames flicker near the trunk at right, beneath a dramatic sky streaked with storm clouds and orange sunset light.
Rendered in oil with strong Baroque-style chiaroscuro, warm golden light rakes across taut, straining muscles against deep shadow, richly textured feathers and stone surfaces, the whole composition charged with the intense drama of suffering and struggle.
