About this work
A young woman wrapped in a pale yellow cloth sits on a rock at the water's edge, one hand raised defensively as she turns toward two older men closing in from a dense, autumn-colored bush behind her. The nearer man, in a red robe and leaning on a wooden staff, reaches out and pulls at the edge of her drapery, while a second, grey-haired man peers over the foliage with his hand extended toward them both.
Warm ochre, rust and gold dominate the palette, with the woman's cool skin and cream fabric set against fiery autumn leaves and a glowing, cloud-streaked sky. Strong light falls across the central group, modeling the drapery in crisp folds and giving the flesh a smooth, polished finish typical of academic figure painting. The tight cropping and converging gazes create a tense, uneasy mood of intrusion and vulnerability.
