About this work
In a dense forest clearing, a bearded man kneels with one hand raised in a pleading gesture toward a group of young women confronting him. One recoils behind a tree with her hand at her mouth, another crouches in the undergrowth, and three more stand together near a brick wall, one shielding her breasts and another draped in green cloth.
Warm flesh tones glow against the deep greens and browns of the foliage, with soft light filtering through the canopy onto the figures. The modeling is smooth and finely finished in academic manner, while the woodland behind is handled more loosely. The mood is tense and hushed, fixed at the moment of surprise between the stranger and the group.
