About this work
A winged, haloed angel in white robes sits at the entrance of a rock-cut tomb, one hand raised toward its dark opening, a staff topped with a cross in the other. Before him three women in colored mantles approach across a stony path; the foremost kneels with hands raised, while two others stand embracing behind her. Trees and rolling hills recede toward a glowing evening sky.
Warm golden light spreads across the horizon behind darker foreground trees, and the women's red, blue and ochre garments stand out against earthy stone and green foliage. Forms are modeled with smooth academic finish and gentle gradation, and the hushed gestures of grief turning to wonder give the scene a solemn, reverent atmosphere.
