About this work
A heavily muscled, bearded man crowned with laurel reels forward, one arm flung wide, steadied by a fair-haired girl who offers him a cup; beside them an aged, grinning satyr pours wine from a jug near a lion-mask herm that two putti clutch. To the right a nude woman raises her arm as a bearded satyr and a horned faun crowd close, with more putti at lower right.
Warm ochre and flesh tones glow against a dark wooded backdrop, the central body strongly modeled in raking light with smooth academic finish and confident anatomical drawing. The crowded, twisting composition and flushed color give the scene an intense, riotous energy typical of a bacchanal.
